ABSTRACT Physical building development in Gadjah Mada University's complex produced facade design diversification and some architecture element's configuration types that affects campus building identity confusion. Related to that topic, this research's goal is to know about architectural facade elements configuration and to identify architecture's element that formalize Gadjah Mada University building facade configuration. The research employed explorative methods followed by explorative activities to find facts in the field, then analyzed to find results in accordance with the purpose of this study. Area of this study was the whole complex of Gadjah Mada University at the North side of Yogyakarta. Objects research consists of 84 buildings built from year 1950 until 2000 with the criteria respresents all of periods, zones and faculties. Analysis unit of this research is building facade. Parameters of facade architectural elements including roof, column, exterior wall, openings, and ground floor. Principle design of facade configuration has special emphasis on symmetrical, articulation, visual proportion, horizontal-vertical direction. The findings of this study were : first, most of Gadjah Mada University building facade symmetrical shows tends to totally symmetry formed by symmetrical roof, symmetrical building mass and architectural elements configuration symmetrically according to facade axis. Second, most of the facade have strong facade articulation with focus on main entrance as facade articulation former main element. Third, the resulted facade visual proportion has tends more on proportion in which roof has same height with the body, with proportion building's domination is not more than 3 floors. Fourth, most facades have horizontal direction stronger than vertical direction. Building mass and architectural element configuration affects horizontal domination.
