Abstract

This research was aimed at finding out whether or not training on modem reading strategies using TOEFL discourses was effective in enhancing the Senior High School students' reading comprehension. This research was based on a predetermined experimental design which was actually a pretest-posttest control group design. It had two groups of subjects taking part in either the experimental or control group. Subjects involved in the research were the second year's students of Physics and Biology classes. There were 180 subjects randomly selected from two state schools representing eight state schools in Maria-do. The subjects were divided into two groups of 90. They were then randomly assigned to either the experimentalor control group. An subjects of both groups sat for a reading comprehension pretest of a multiple choice format. Results of the pretest were analyzed to find out whether there was asignificant difference between the two groups. The result indicated that there was no significant difference. Further, the experimental woup was trained based on modern reading strategies using the TOEFL discourses. Whereas, the control group was trained based on conventional reading strategies using discourses in school package book. After the treatment, the posttest of reading comprehension was given to all subjects of the two groups and the results were analyzed using t-test. Results of the posttest indicated a significant difference between the two groups. Results of the experimental group reflected a much better performance than that of the control group.Therefore, obviously it could be concluded that the training on modern reading strategies using TOEFL discourses was effective in enhancing the students' reading comprehension.
